Social media is a good source of information but we do not advise that you believe everything you see online. They are very popular nowadays and almost every person has or had an experience having a social media account.
It is for this reason that many claims that social media advertising is an effective way of marketing your business. Although, we do not argue that social media is a powerful tool to spread a story or news, we do not agree that it makes an effective marketing platform.
We have listed the things that you must know about social media advertising.
1. Social media advertising is not completely free.
Starters or new businesses are easily persuaded by the idea that they can do free advertisement via social media. However, what they do not know is that it is not entirely free.
It is indeed free to set up an account and create your profile but it takes time to create and maintain a social media account. You may not have to spend a penny to manage a social media account but you will have to invest ample time to maintain it.
Time is money and you can have a better of use for their time instead of maintaining a social media account. The time you spend on the social media account could be spent doing something else that could be more profitable for your business.
2. You need a lot of followers before social media advertising really pays off.
The thing about social media advertising is that you must have numerous followers in order to reach out to wide market. We are not talking about hundreds of followers, we are talking about thousands perhaps millions of followers before you can really claim a success.
Imagine the number of people that you have to win in order for you to introduce your product. It is a lot of work to gain that much followers.
3. The social media platforms restrict the market that you can reach.
Despite the fact that you were able to gain multiple followers, it is not a guarantee you will be able to reach to every follower you have. Say for instance, you have a million followers; it does not mean that when you post an update every one of them will be notified.
In most cases, only thousands or worse hundreds of them will know about your recent update. See, it is a lot of work to be able to reach out to your targeted market via social media.
4. It is difficult to track or predict success.
Regardless of the number of so-called experts that claim to know all the secrets when it comes to make social media advertising a success, no single strategy works for every business. What might have worked some may not work for you.
It is also difficult to track the number of views or visits that you get on your social media account therefore it is hard to tell if what approach really works and does not.
5. People rarely use social media to look for things or product that they need.
Another thing about social media is that people do not really go to their social media account to look for a product or business. They go to social media accounts to communicate or engage with people they know. People use social media to look for people not products and services.
It is very rare for a person to log in to his or her social media account and look for a party planner or place to go to for a vacation. In most cases, people will still use the commonly used search engines to find what they need.
The only time that people will visit your social media account is if someone they know already happened to have shared a story or experience with your product or service.
6. It is exhausting to keep up with social media updates.
Social media websites constantly update their platforms. It is already a lot of work to maintain an account and it means more work to keep up with the updates.
We therefore conclude that social media advertising makes a good supplementary form of advertisement but it should not be the main and sole way of marketing your product or business.
